1956: Together with his brother, Jürgen Helmig, he gets the first German with a professional contract with a farm team of the Baltimore Orioles
He played two World Cups and five European Championships for Germany, as well as 67 international matches

Founder and for 20 years head of the VFR Amigos Mannheim
1975 - 1978: President of the Mannheim Tornados
His highlight: At the World Cup in 1972 against Puerto Rico, with Roberto Clemente as coach, he played as Young Pitcher with only 4 runs in 9 innings
